EU urged to curb “massive impacts” of Red Sea crisis
As the Red Sea situation continues to disrupt shipping industry and international trade, a European retail organization has urged EU countries to resolve the crisis.
In a letter to Belgium’s foreign minister, European retail industry body EuroCommerce said the crisis has already had “massive impacts” on businesses, Reuters reported.
“The longer carriers are forced to reroute, the more businesses, and ultimately consumers, will suffer from additional costs adding to the already high costs of living in Europe,” read in the letter.
EuroCommerce that has members in about 27 countries is the main European body representing the retail and wholesale sector .
Red Sea is one of the world’s most important trade routes. Analysts believe that the volatile situation causes an extra $1 million per container ship to make a round trip around the southern tip of Africa and avoid the Red Sea.
