Red Sea Crisis: Volume surge halts air cargo to Dubai

Air cargo movement to Dubai, a major global trade hub, faces major disruption as the local terminal operator suspends its operation for 48 hours.

The embargo, which is meant to clear up previous buildups, will start from Monday midnight, said Dnata, one of the world’s largest air service providers offering ground handling.

The suspension is enforced due to the huge backlog created as Dubai is being used as an alternative supply chain route due to the Red Sea crisis.

“In recent months, we’ve experienced a significant surge in cargo volumes at our Dubai facilities, particularly in import of general cargo such as fast-moving consumer goods, electronics and fashion accessories,” Dnata said.

The Dubai Airport Authority declared that they had to implement a temporary embargo to expedite the recovery in two Dubai airports.

Dnata handles some 2.4m tonnes of cargo annually at Dubai and Dubai World Central airports.
